Purdue: Weeks 5 and 6

The last two weeks have been focused on the video on sustainability and the presentation on sanitation. But there has also been a couple of other things to distract us from our tasks. Last weekend, we helped cater a couple of weddings (which is the reason why I didn’t do a blog post last week). We got to help with the prep work, plating, setting up tables, serving, and cleaning up after the guests left. It made for a long couple of days.

This week we toured the West Lafayette Waste Treatment Plant. This is where they take our “yack” form the dining halls (the leftover food), and have microorganisms eat it away, which creates methane, and finally energy! They also clean the water waste that comes through as well. Here are the pictures:

This is where the "yack" gets dumped.

Raw sludge and digested sludge are kept apart.

Cleaning the water...

And one of the final products: Clean water!

I can’t believe we only have two weeks left. Where did the time go?!
